The Nile Basin Initiative  (26.06.01)
The Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) is an undertaking of the ten Nile riparian countries: Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. These are the following aims: to develop the water resources of the Nile in a sustainable and equitable way, to ensure prosperity, security and peace for all its people; to ensure cooperation and joint action between the riparian states, to target poverty eradication and promote economic integration.

The first meeting of the International Consortium for Cooperation on the Nile (ICCON), taking place from June 26-28 2001 in Geneva, will establish partnerships between the Nile riparian countries, as well as a broad range of bilateral and multilateral donors and other interested parties, such as civil society, professional organisations, media and NGOs. ICCON is foreseen as a long-term partnership of the Nile States and the international community seeking to raise and coordinate funding from various sources.
Three organisations are already working in close collaboration with the NBI: the World Bank, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). In addition, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), using funds provided by the Italian Government, has been engaged in an extensive program of support for the Nile Basin Countries.
