Foodstuffs have been very much affected by globalization for centuries. In colonial times entire regions were turned into plantations for coffee, sugar, cocoa, or palm oil. Many producer countries suffer from the negative impact of these monocultures to this day. Great inequities in the production and trade of food products persist. Profits still mostly end up in the north while the actual producers often live in abject poverty. The Berne Declaration’s primary areas of involvement are coffee, rice, and water.
