Syngenta successfully lobbies FAO to continue pesticide marketing ploy  (14.12.09)
Syngenta and the industry association Croplife fight for permission to keep inappropriate incentives alive in pesticide marketing
Under the code of conduct of the UN-Organization for Food and Agriculture (FAO) the pesticide industry may not use inappropriate marketing incentives. The Berne Declaration has repeatedly pointed out that Syngenta is in violation of the code when it stages competitions with rewards like cars or motorcycles in connection with the promotion of paraquat in Thailand or Costa Rica. FAO experts looking into the allegations have repeatedly suggested that such incentives should be explicitly listed and prohibited in FAO-guidelines on pesticide marketing. But Syngenta and the association of pesticide producers protested loudly and successfully lobbied FAO to keep the list of impermissible incentives out of the guidelines. Syngenta, undeterred, continues to insist on marketing its deadly pesticides by any means possible.
