The Public Eye Awards 2006  (07.07.05)
At the end of January 2006 the Berne Declaration and Pro Natura are organising the Public Eye Awards for irresponsible corporate behaviour for the second time in Davos, Switzerland. The first Award Ceremony found worldwide attention and provoked reactions from some of the nominated companies.

Since 2000 the Berne Declaration and Pro Natura have been realising an international event at the same time as the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos. This alternative to the WEF is a joint project of a coalition of NGOs from all the continents. It focuses on a well-founded critique of neoliberal globalization as promoted by WEF members – most of them belonging to the biggest multinational corporations.

By presenting concrete cases the Public Eye Awards drastically show the massive social and environmental impacts of a one-sided economic globalization. Furthermore, it becomes obvious that voluntary code of conducts for companies - like the UN initiative the Global Compact - are not sufficient. The NGOs ask for binding norms with effective monitoring and sanctioning mechanisms.

The Public Eye Awards go to companies which excel in harmful social or ecological behaviour. Prizes are awarded in the categories environment, social (human and labour) rights and taxes. In addition, one NGO will be selected for a Positive Award on account of its outstanding and successful campaign against multinational companies.

The main objective of the Public Eye Awards is to promote justice and ecological concerns in a globalized world. In this respect we feel connected to the World Social Forum’s (WSF) principles. The WSF is the civil society alternative to the WEF and took place for the first time in 2001 in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

The Public Eye Awards are coordinated by the Berne Declaration. It is an NGO focussing on development issues based in Zurich and Lausanne and is supported by 20 000 members. It has been campaigning since 1968 at the national and international level for more just and environmentally sustainable North – South relations in politics, economics, culture and food.
