1. Process

The Berne Declaration (BD) and Greenpeace Switzerland examine all nominations and submit them to a jury of experts who shortlist three best cases in each category. For each nomination that makes the shortlist we contact the group or person that submitted it and assist it in compiling a comprehensive nominee file. Based on these files, in Mid-November, the jury selects the winners who will be „honored“ in a prominently attended award-ceremony in Davos on January 28, 2009 ¬– the opening day of the World Economic Forum (WEF).

At an international media conference in Mid-January all nine shortlisted cases will be presented and posted on this website. Organizations or persons that nominate a winner in one of the three categories participate free of charge as laudators at our WEF counter-event.

2. Criteria

The top criteria for the evaluation of nominees are:

  • Validity and substance of the accusation or positive change, respectively; also, the credibility of the nominating organization or individual.

  • Import und relevance of the criticized offense or exemplary internal initiative, respectively.

  • Attractiveness for the media in terms of such factors as surprise, prominence, scandal potential and proximity.

3. Jury

The five-member expert jury includes two representatives each of Greenpeace and BD plus the Public Eye Coordinator. The jury meets twice – once to shortlist nominations and then again to select the winners.
